Why would the color of your water tank matter?

Polyethylene or 'plastic' water tanks are typically available in a variety of colors. The color is usually chosen for aesthetic reasons, but there are a few other reasons to think about it before purchasing your poly tank. The material and size of the water tank are the most visible aspects. When it comes to tank color, however, it is mostly an aesthetic decision that also affects the temperature and quality of the solution stored. Darker colors, such as black, will heat the water while lighter colors, such as white, will keep it cool.

Water storage tanks are usually available in darker colors, such as black or dark green. This is due to the presence of algae and bacteria that are light-sensitive in water. Their growth in water is accelerated by exposing them to sunlight. The darker colors prevent sunlight from entering the tank, thereby inhibiting algae growth. Although most algae pose no risk to human health, they have a negative impact on the taste, odor, and color of the stored water. It is also important to choose the right color to blend in with the surroundings.

Here are some of the reasons why the color of your tank is important.

Building codes: If your home or business is in an estate or business park where building codes are strictly enforced, the color of your plastic water tank can be critical. To avoid purchasing the incorrect color tank, provide management with a visual printout of the various colors in which your chosen tank is available.

Property value: A poly tank that blends in with the surrounding buildings will add value to the property, especially if it is linked to a rainwater harvesting system.

Water temperature: Dark-colored tanks, with black on the end of the spectrum, will always heat up faster and to higher temperatures than lighter-colored tanks, with white on the opposite end of the spectrum. A good compromise is probably to use a color in the middle of the spectrum, such as green if algae growth is an issue

Visual pollution: The visual characteristics of buildings are very important in pristine areas such as national parks and game reserves. The solution is to select a tank color that blends in with the surrounding natural vegetation

Camouflage: In some cases, such as military installations, camouflage may be an important aspect of the buildings – for example, the commonly seen bright green plastic water tanks are very visible.

Industrial processing plants: Where there are many water tanks and/or chemical tanks, it may be a good idea to standardize specific colors based on the contents of the tanks.
