Different Types of Marine Buoys and what they mean

A buoy is a floating device that assists boat operators. These are a type of navigational aid for marine buoys. Navigational aids are devices or systems that are present in the environment of a pleasure craft. They alert vessel operators to potential hazards or obstructions, such as shallow water. Navigational aids are provided to assist pleasure craft operators in determining their position and course, as well as indicating the best or preferred route to take.

There are numerous types of buoys available to meet needs ranging from basic navigation to scientific data collection. Some buoys have top-mounted lights, while others do not. Buoys are also available in a variety of shapes. Buoys serve two functions. Some are there to inform boaters about potential hazards, while others are there to show boaters where they can travel safely. Buoys can be found on any type of waterway around the world. Consider buoys to be traffic lights for boaters on the waterways.

Here are different types of marine buoys:

Port hand buoy: A port hand buoy denotes the port (left) side of a channel or the location of the danger. When traveling upstream, it must remain on the port (left) side of the pleasure craft. The buoy has a green color light; numbered, displayed identification letters can be shaped as cans or pillars.

Starboard hand buoy: A starboard hand buoy denotes the starboard (right) side of a channel or the location of the danger. When traveling upstream, it must be kept on the starboard (right) side of the pleasure craft. The starboard buoy is red and has a cone-shaped top.

Bifurcation buoy: A bifurcation buoy marks the point at which a channel divides into branches. When moving upstream, you can pass this buoy on either side. It has red and green bands on it. The bifurcation junction buoy's purpose is to indicate which channel is the main channel.

Isolated danger buoy: A single hazard is moored to a single danger in a secure or safe body of water. It is used to mark an isolated hazard in otherwise navigable waters and is usually moored directly on or above the hazard to mark a large rock or sunken ship.

Anchorage buoy: An anchorage buoy is a buoy that marks the outer limits of designated anchorage areas because it marks the perimeter of it.

Cautionary buoy: A cautionary buoy denotes an area where boaters should be warned of potential hazards such as firing ranges, raceways, seaplane bases, underwater structures, or areas where there is no safe through-channel and traffic separates.

Information buoy: An information buoy is a buoy that displays information of interest to mariners in the form of words or symbols. It's white with an orange open-faced square symbol on two opposite sides and two orange horizontal bands above and below the square symbols.
